Grief is...

Grief is unexpected.
You can never be prepared to handle grief. It comes sudden for some, and for others is looms in the shadows; creeping in slowly. However it arrives, it is never welcome.

Grief is physical.
It is not just the emotion of intense sadness...it actually physically hurts. It feels like a ton of bricks pushing down on your chest. It feels like the moment you lost your child at the park, but it never goes away. It feels like a nightmare, but it is real life.

Grief is to be endured.
There are no short cuts. You can't go around, under or over grief. It is there, like an unwelcome guest, that will never go away. Grief cannot be escaped.

Grief is lonely.
There are thousands of books, talks, and suggestions...but none just for you. Grief is personal, individual and different for everyone. No one has lost what you have. You can grieve along side someone, but there is no sharing your portion of pain or heaviness.

Grief is love.
It is because we love so deeply and intense that we then grieve so deeply and intense. The only way to avoid grief is to not love. The love we have for those we have lost, outweighs the grief. Always.

I was so heartbroken to read the shared post on FB. It is absolutely incredible that you are able to not only feel this things, but then share them with us in such a positive light. Thank you for always being so inspirational.

Beautiful, sad and true. I am so sorry for the loss of your Ruby. So completely unfair to her and to you and your family.

Thank you for this. It explains exactly everything I am feeling in this moment. It has been three months since I lost my baby. I feel there is no more happiness in this world and I have to just endure this emptiness for the rest of my mortal life.

Thank you so much for this. This is everything I am feeling this very moment. The happiness of the world has disappeared and I am trying to endure this mortal life. It has been three months since I lost my baby boy.

Ani you don't know me but I immediately thought of your blog when I saw a mama on Facebook who just lost her 3 month old to a liver disease/transplant. I think you could offer her some great comfort, please if you have time, go to Facebook and search "Kate Cherrington Conway"--I think the link is https://www.facebook.com/rykerandamanda

You have such a beautiful wisdom and grace!

Your beautiful words make me think of the scripture about Jesus: "a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief” (Isaiah 53:3). Grief is also godlike.

I don't know if you're notified when you get comments, but I just wanted to say that your family is still in my thoughts. I have the "I'm an organ donor because of Ruby Jane Taylor" button on my blog, and each time I see it I think of her, and you. I'm finally (after 10 long years) pregnant with our first child, a girl, and my heart aches knowing what you've been through. But I see the joy have, too, with Lola, and when you reflect back on the happy times with Ruby. You are strong and your family is beautiful. Thank you for your inspiration. From one mama of a girl to another- big hugs and so much love. XO
